This little guy is fanart based on a design by one of my all-time favorite artists, James Gurney. It is featured in one of his books, page 205 of Imaginative Realism, in a chapter about Video Game Design.
For James Gurney’s standards this design seems little more than an insignificant doodle (seriously, his artwork is incredible) but I liked the simplicity and uniqueness and thought it could be a cool little modeling challenge to try and get finished in a relatively short amount of time.
I hope I was able to capture the character of the design. He seems quite playful and a bit shy despite the arachnid set of eyes. I wish I was more talented with animation so I could’ve made an animation better suited to his quirky character.
Making this little guy was a lot of fun. As it says in the side-bar, I modeled him in 3ds Max but I decided to rig and animate the character in Blender. This was a bit of a learning experience but I was able succeed well enough to bring him to life well enough for this little demo video.
Thank you for taking a moment to view my latest project and also a huge amount of thanks to James Gurney for being a wonderfully inspirational personality.
Seriously, check out his YouTube channel, it is magical.
